firstarrivedinChinatostudyChinesein2002.Afterseveralholidaytrips1washookedonthiscountryanditsculture,andstudiedfor1yearinLondonbeforearrivinginBeijingtoenrolintoBeijingNormalUniversityfor1year’slanguagestudy.WhenclassesstartedinSeptember,Irealiseditwasgoingtobeahardgraft.Thereweresev—eraldifferentclassesonthetimetable:Reading&Writing,Speaking,ListeningandNewspa—perStudies.Morningclassesstartedat8:00am,rightthroughBeijing。sharshwinter,classeswerelongat90minutes,andontopofthismyUniversityrequiredmyUKclassmatesandItoattendaneveningclassofClassicalChinese.ThemaindifferenceinwaythelanguagewastaughtwasthatnaturallyeverythingwasinChinese.BackintheUK,theteachersgenerallystucktothisrule,butifastudentreallyhadaproblemunderstandingsomethingtheymightslipbackintoEnglishtomakesureyouwereclearonaparticularpoint.Soatthebeginning,1wouldoftenraisemyhandtoasktheteachertoexplainsomething1wasn’tsureabout,andtheywouldexplainittomeinadiffer—entway.InChinese.Andmostofthetime,1wasstilIasbaffledaftertheexplanationasbefore.Butinordernottoholdtheclassback,Iusuallyjustnodded,thenmadeanoteofanyunclearpointsandcheckedmyselfinadictionaryoutsideofclass.Otherdifferenceswereintheteachingmethodsandotherforeignstudent。sbehaviourinclass.ThemajorityofstudentsstudyingChineseinclassesatBeishidawereJapaneseandKorean,andtheywereusedtowhatseemstoWesternstudentstobeamorerigidapproachtolearning.Theyweregenerallysilentinclassunlesspickedupontoansweraquestion.Thisactuallymadememoretensetoo.Theteachinginvolvedstickingcloselytotextbookexer—cises—eveninthespeakingclasses.Speakingoutusuallyinvolvedwhatwasformeaslightlynerve—wrackingtriptothefrontoftheclass.Thisseemedalittlepointless,as90%ofstudentswouldsimplyhavepreparedtheirspeech,slippeditinsidetheirtextbook,andthenwouldreaditoutrotetotheclass.Westernstudentsaremoreusedtoadiscussion—basedmethodofteaching,especiallyinspeakingclasses.Thisseemstometoallowstudentstoparticipatewhentheyfeeltheycanwithoutthepressureofbeingsingledout.SowhileinChina,mymethodsforlearningfitthemethodofteaching:Learningvocabulary,grammarandcharactersaccordingtothetextbookexercisesandexamples.Ifyoustucktothetextbookcontent,youcouldbesureofahighermarkwhenexamtimecame.Manystu—dentsreceivedmarksinthemid—ninetiesacrosstheboardusingthismethod.Morcfl2007BIIInguolTIme055
