There are many ways for commuters to get from one 
destination to another. Attracting customers to your mode 
of travel, and making it profitable, is becoming increasingly 
difficult. 
A case in point is US’s only high-speed line Acela. With 
a maximum speed of just over 240km/h the Acela is not 
that fast by world standards yet it still manages to entice 
commuters away from air travel. Road & Rail Technology 
explores the newly overhauled trains. 
Charging toll fare without causing traffic jams was the 
challenge for the creators of a new German-based system. 
We look at the solution – a dual system with automatic 
and manual-booking alternatives that utilises satellite 
navigation, mobile and fixed network telecommunications. 
The new A86 expressway not only cuts down on

80 per cent of this new motorway running underground
