The Bucket List

The Bucket List is a film about two complete strangers from opposite ends of the societal spectrum who end up sharing an unexpected bond as the result of a checklist – mutually created and consisting of a list of things to do before either one of them "kicks the bucket," which is a nicer way of saying "to die." Achieving this goal, however, is complicated by the fact that both men are diagnosed with cancer and given less than one year to live.
《遗愿清单》讲述的是两个来自不同阶层的陌生人最终因一份清单而意外地走在一起，互相激励并在“去世”（这是“翘辫子”的委婉说法）前完成清单上的愿望的故事。要达成这个目标是极其困难的，因为两位老人罹患癌症，捱不到一年。

Carter Chambers, played by Morgan Freeman, is a blue-collar mechanic who has made the most of his life, despite the fact that he has always put the needs of others before his own. Meanwhile, multi-millionaire Edward Cole (played by Jack Nicholson), though wealthy and powerful beyond belief, has never quite seen past the end of his own nose. When both of them realize that life – whether lived selfishly or selflessly – has thus far proved to be an unfulfilling experience, they decide that, instead of waiting in line for death in a hospital room, they will to take what little remaining time they have on earth by the reins.

And so this odd couple proceeds to do the unthinkable, surmount the insurmountable, and experience the extraordinary – for example, watching the sunset after having climbed the Egyptian pyramids, or driving rare and highly expensive racecars into the ground on a secluded racetrack. As usual, Morgan Freeman plays the voice of reason and rationality, a don't-judge-a-book-by-its-cover straight-shooter with an incredible and understated intellect, while Jack Nicholson stays true to form as his predictably proud, arrogant and egotistical self. Both actors are fine in their roles and share a convincing dynamic.

The Bucket List is a playful film about the limitations of life and how to exceed them. Though slightly improbable that these two aging and terminally ill men still have enough energy and vigor to perform the daredevil stunts that transpire throughout, or that the thrill of sky-diving is a sensible or wise decision for someone who is wearing a catheter (especially when the aforementioned catheter becomes displaced during a simple enough event as dinner), the moral of the tale is nonetheless communicated with force: Life is too precious a thing to let simply pass by. And even if this message comes off as a bit clichéd at times, The Bucket List can nonetheless be appreciated for its cinematography and incredible panoramas.

Carter: What are you doing?
Edward: A little rewrite, that's all. I mean, don't you wanna go out with some balls? Guns blazing? Have a little fun?
Carter: It was not supposed to be about guns blazing or anything like that. You're missing the point.
Edward: What the hell is "witness something majestic"?
Carter: Have you ever been to the Himalayas?
Edward: "Drive a Mustang Shelby", not bad. I've got one. Alright, how about sky diving? Now we are on to something.
Carter: We are on to something? Let me see that. Come on.

Carter: "Kiss the most beautiful girl in the world"? How do you propose to do that?
Edward: Volume.
Carter: "Get a tattoo". Is that the sum of your ambition? Edward, I've taken baths deeper than you.
Edward: It's easy to be deep in freshman philosophy. What does Dr. Hollins say? We've got months, right?
Carter: A year, maybe.
Edward: You think 45 years went by fast? We could do this. We should do this.
Carter: No, I… I…
Edward: Don't think about money. That's all I got is money.
Carter: But I… I don't know.
Edward: What don't you know?
Carter: It was meant to be a metaphorical. Just trying to get a handle on…
Edward: Blah blah blah. Metaphors, you're the one crying you never took a shot. Here's your chance.
Carter: My chance to what? Make a fool of myself?
Edward: Never too late. What do you think happens now? I go back and sit around listening to people talking about mezzanine financing and subordinate debt, pretending that I care about dead money. You go home to some ceremonial procession into death with everyone standing around watching you die while you're trying to comfort them. Is that what you want? To be smothered by pity and grief? Well not me, and in your heart, Carter, I believe not you either. We're both in the same boat, how's that for a metaphor? We've got a real opportunity here.
Carter: Opportunity? That is really twisted, even by your standards.
Edward: You still feel good, right? Energy's coming back a little bit? Asymptomatic, the doc says? The way I see it, we can lie around here, hoping for a miracle in some bullshit science experiment. Or we can put some moves on.

(Carter is kind of persuaded)

Carter: Sky diving, huh?
Edward: All right.

Carter: Have you found joy in your life?
Edward: Uh, huh.
Carter: Answer the question.
Edward: Me? Answer the question "Have I found joy in my life"?
Carter: Yes.

Carter: Has your life brought joy to others?
Edward: Oh, this type of question… I… I don't know. I don't think about how other people gauge. Ask them.
Carter: I'm asking you.
Edward: Fine. Let me put it to you this way. After the break-up and ensuing fleecing of her dad, Emily went to live with her mother. You know, you try to stay close, but it gets down to holidays, phone calls, birthday cards, you know. Anyway, Emily goes to college, joins one of her "save the poor people," the animals and what not. Meets a guy, decided she loves him. A good looking kid, driven, smart. But there was something about him, so when she said they were engaged, I told her I was against it. But being my daughter, naturally, she went ahead and married him anyway. Needless to say I wasn't invited to the wedding.
Carter: That must have hurt.
Edward: You think? The first time he hit her, she came to me. I wanted to bash his brain in. She wouldn't let me. She said she loved him and that it wasn't his fault, he'd had a few drinks. She was the one who picked the fight. Next time it happened, she didn't come to me. The ex told me, nice to hear her voice again.
Carter: What did you do?
Edward: What any father would do. I took care of it. I called a guy who called a guy who handles this kind of things. I don't know what he said, don't know what he did, all I know is he didn't kill him. And my daughter never heard from him again.
Carter: How did she react?
Edward: Called me names you wouldn't believe, and worse. She said I was dead to her. I'm not proud of everything I did, but I am pretty sure I'd do it all again. So if they won't let me into Egyptian heaven because my daughter hates me, well, then I guess that's just the way it goes. However you answer your two questions. How do we get down from this tomb?
